John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 12th - Lochranza to Ayr (50 miles)
Leaving the youth hostel, we had a great climb followed by an
even bigger drop (or so it seemed) to the ferry at Brodick. We rode
aong a wonderful coast road lined with coloured rocks, where Julie
did her 'art photo'. The Isle of Arran had been a blissful experience,
except that Julie's wasp sting started to bother her and my rear
spindle broke just before we got to Brodick. We had lunch then on
the ferry to Ardrossan, where we searched in vain for a bike shop.
Riding seven miles with a broken spindle is not to be recommended,
even if the road to Irving was dead flat. The bike shop we found
there fitted a new spindle for under £5, but now the wasp sting was
looking quite nasty. We bought some anti-hystamene tablets and
prepared to ride the last thirteen miles to Ayr. Without doubt these
were the worst so far, with rain, wind and main road traffic making
us very glad to get to the youth hostel. But there our world was
turned upside-down! NEXT
