John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 21st - Castleton to Dimmingsdale
(38 miles)
Leaving Castleton we decided to take the main road rather than the 'B' road
through Winnat's Pass (1 in 5). There was only one problem - the main road
was closed. It had been closed since 1979 due to a land-slip at Mam Tor, so
we had a quite exciting time getting over this as you can see from the pictures.
The ridei into Buxton felt distinctly prosaic after that. Lunch was followed by
a long hard climb up Axe Edge, a windy ride along the top and a long
straight descent into Leek. This descent included a section at 1 in 7 which
for some reason frightened the life out of me. Leek was truly horrible - great
noisy lorries and no cafe. More lorries (and more hills) on the road to
Cheadle, where I at least managed to get a cup of tea. One more up and
down to Oakmore and we were ready for the outward-bound
initiative test known as finding the hostel. We passed - just. NEXT
