John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 7th - Kyleakin to Garramore (30 miles)
More rain. We went into Broadfield to do some shopping at the Coop. We got
some soda bread for Julie and butteries for me and some dried fruit for both of
us. Apart from this mission, the town was a dead loss, so off we went over the
hills. We passed another group on bikes and, when we stopped to de-cape, one
of them caught up with us. He had a great red beard and gabbled at us
incomprehensibly. Ah, we thought, a native speaking to us in the vernacular -
and we were delighted to hear the typical gutteral Gaelic sounds. But then we
realised that he was just an Italian tourist trying to speak to us in English. Back
on the road, we passed a coach in the ditch at Kilmore - lots of cursing motorists
Waiting for the ferry at Armadale Pier, we had a late lunch at the cafe and met a
Canadian cyclist who had been touring the UK since April. Just past Morar we
saw our first Highland Games - it looked like a series of portly gentlemen in skirts
carrying telegraph poles. On arrival at Garramore, we felt that we had only ridden
about five miles - getting fitter! NEXT
