John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 16th - Carlisle to Keswick (18 miles)
As we resumed our ride, we realised that the first half of
our route had been entirely in Scotland. Our first day in
England turned out to be our shortest ride - although
Julie's leg was slowly returning to normal, it was still
swollen.To reduce the mileage, we used the train to
Maryport, which went through Wigton, the home of our
friends the Williams. We shouted 'Hi Geoff, Pat, Sarah,
Ian and Anna' as we passed, but got no reply. After lunch
at Cockermouth we climbed up the quite gentle slope of
Whinlatter Pass. There were a couple of showers on the
way but we enjoyed the ride, which included an uplifting
view of Lake Bassenthwaite. Such civilized scenery after
the rigorous grandeur of the Highlands. NEXT
