John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 19th - Slaidburn to Mankinholes
(32 miles)
On the map the road from Slaiburn to Clitheroe had lots of
arrows on it. We asked the warden about the gradients of
these hills and she suggested we might want to consider
starting from somewhere else. They turned out to be a
succession of short 1 in 6 and 1 in 7 rises, like a giant
staircase - at the top we thought we were in heaven. This
was followed (predictably) by an exciting drop down into
Clitheroe, where we stopped for elevenses. Then on to
Padiham for lunch in Gawthorpe Hall. Later in the day,
Burnley distinguished itself with the nastiest suburban climb
yet. Then through a gorge for the last eight miles into
Todmorden, which was a dead loss with everything shut at
4.30pm on a Saturday. To Hebden Bridge and the long
1 in 6 hill up to the hostel. NEXT
