John O'Groats to Land's End - 1989
August 20th - Mankinholes to Castleton (48 miles)
As expected, the first 30 miles was quite unpleasant. With dark satanic
mills all over the place it was an unbroken urban nightmare. The scenery
was perfectly matched by the weather - the wind was against us and it was
overcast. To bring this part of the ride to a fitting conclusion, we had a
horrible lunch at Glossop. Then, as kept happening on this ride, the whole
thing changed. The sun started to shine and we launched ourselves into the
countryside in style by riding up the Snake Pass with a tailwind. Down the
other side it was fantastic country for mile after mile on the way to the
Ladybower Reservoir. Only in the last few miles, as we turned into the wind,
did we start to feel the strain. We were quite glad to see the hostel even
though it was packed with walkers. NEXT
